Researchers at the University of Copenhagen tested the sperm quality of randomly selected respondents and conduct a detailed analysis of samples in the laboratory. At the same time, levels of vitamin D in their blood were measured. As a result, nearly half the participants have a number of vitamin D are less related to the lack of exposure to natural sunlight or the length of time in a solarium.
Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, which helps regulate levels of calcium and phosphorous to generate healthy bones. Furthermore, the number of healthy sperm in men with vitamin D or less was lower compared with men who get adequate vitamin D intake. The ability to absorb calcium also inhibited.
The findings are published in the journal Human Reproduction complements previous research that links vitamin D to the production of sperm. The study also explains why many couples get pregnant when on vacation. The reason is because they are more often outside the room than a regular day or days of work so that higher sun exposure. Similarly, as reported from Dailymail, Saturday (21/05/2011).
Researchers found that nearly half of the participants experienced that insufficient intake of vitamin D below 50 nmol/l. In fact, the optimal levels recommended by most experts is at least 75 nmol/l.
"The level of vitamin D is positively associated with the movement of sperm, which confirms the role of vitamin D in human sperm function," explained Dr. Martin Blomberg Jensen, one of the researchers.
