Has now found a blood test that reveals whether a person is at risk of diabetes at least 10 years before symptoms appear. By measuring the levels of five markers in the blood, doctors can predict the early emergence of type 2 diabetes.That could serve as early warning for those most at risk, giving them time to improve your diet, or change their lifestyle. Dr Thomas Wang, who developed the test said, "These findings can provide understanding in the way that altered metabolism very early in the process that led to diabetes."
"The findings could also increase the likelihood that the individual selected, this measurement can identify those in the highest risk of developing diabetes so that preventive measures can be established," he continued.
Diabetes occurs when the pancreas can not produce enough insulin-the hormone that controls blood sugar, or when insulin does not work properly. Dr Wang and colleagues from Massachusetts General Hospital to see the historical blood samples taken from 189 patients with diabetes before they show symptoms of the disease and compared with the blood of 189 healthy people.
After measuring the levels of metabolites of 61-by-product of metabolism found five amino acids are higher in people with diabetes. Some of these markers previously seen higher in people suffering from obesity or insulin resistance.
When the researchers looked at people who are most likely to develop type 2 diabetes, for example those who are overweight or who have a family history of diabetes. The researchers found that those who have the highest levels of the marker five times more likely to suffer from the disease than those with the lowest level. The results were published in the journal Nature Medicine.
Victoria King, head of research at Diabetes UK, said early diagnosis and effective treatment is essential to reduce the risk of complications such as panyakit heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and blindness.
"This research could lead to ways to help us identify those at risk, as well as giving us a new understanding of how and why type 2 diabetes develops," he explained.
Around two million Britons suffer from type 2 diabetes, the kind associated with being overweight in middle age. While the other 700 thousand were estimated to have the disease without knowing it.
